Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton established an unparalleled record in F1 by both securing seven championships, the most in the sport’s history. Nevertheless, Ross Brawn, a former technical director who collaborated with both icons, has expressed that he rates Michael higher than Lewis.
Brawn and Schumacher clinched seven world championships together during their separate tenures with Benetton and Ferrari. Their collaboration with the Italian team proved to be particularly historic, as Schumacher secured five consecutive titles.
From 2010 to 2013, Brawn also held the position of team principal at Mercedes, where he had the chance to work with Hamilton before the Briton went on to equal Schumacher’s record.
In an interview with Auto Hebdo, Brawn compared Michael Schumacher to Lewis Hamilton and rated Schumacher more highly. As quoted by Planet F1, he remarked:
“Only once every decade or so. I’ve collaborated with Lewis, another incredibly fast and talented driver who takes a completely different approach. He has the kind of notoriety and high-speed lifestyle that many desire, in stark contrast to the tranquility Michael sought.”
Nonetheless, despite their comparable talent, Brawn endorsed Schumacher’s legacy.
“At the core, there was a consistent commitment, talent, and drive. The approach may have varied. In my view, playing a part in his attainment of seven world titles was truly remarkable. No one surpasses Michael,” he added.
Schumacher’s and Hamilton’s statistics share some similarities. The British driver has surpassed the German with more wins, totaling 103, and he also outshone Schumacher during his era of dominance. While racing for Mercedes, Hamilton secured six world championships to equal the all-time record set by the now 56-year-old legend.
Both Schumacher and Hamilton have undeniably made a lasting impact on the sport, with their periods of dominance set to be remembered in F1 for generations.

Lewis Hamilton is set to follow in Michael Schumacher’s footsteps by joining Scuderia Ferrari for the 2025 F1 season. As anticipation builds around this move, Ralf Schumacher highlighted significant differences between his brother and the 39-year-old British driver. In an interview with Sport1.de, he remarked:
The main distinction is that Michael, unlike Lewis, was able to collaborate effectively with the engineers to create a car tailored perfectly to his driving style.
The former F1 legend clinched five consecutive titles with Ferrari, creating an extraordinary legacy. Meanwhile, Hamilton has achieved equal success with Mercedes, ushering in his own era of dominance.
At the age of 39, Lewis Hamilton is anticipated to face a significant challenge as he transitions to the Ferrari team.
