In a bold and unexpected career shift, seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton is set to make his feature acting debut as the lead in the upcoming Viking epic “Hammer of the North.” The film, now in pre-production, will mark Hamilton’s first on-screen role and signals a significant expansion of his creative career beyond motorsport.
“Hammer of the North” is an original historical drama set in 9th-century Scandinavia, during the height of Viking expansion across Europe. The movie will follow the journey of Eirik, a legendary warrior who returns from exile to reclaim his birthright and lead his people through a time of brutal warfare, betrayal, and supernatural mythology. Hamilton will play Eirik, a complex character torn between his duty as a chieftain and a desire for peace in a world governed by blood and conquest.
Hamilton, who has long expressed interest in storytelling and filmmaking, said in a statement, “This project is something truly different for me, but storytelling has always been a passion. Hammer of the North offers a powerful story of resilience, identity, and leadership—things I’ve always connected with.”
This latest venture follows Hamilton’s successful entry into the film world as a producer of the upcoming F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, where he served as both a creative advisor and producer through his company, Dawn Apollo Films. His work on that film was praised for helping bring authenticity and depth to its portrayal of Formula 1 racing. With Hammer of the North, Hamilton is stepping directly in front of the camera in a demanding, action-packed role that will test both his physical and dramatic range.
The film will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Robert Eggers (The Northman, The Witch), known for his dark, atmospheric style and attention to historical detail. Eggers commented on the casting choice, saying, “Lewis brings intensity, focus, and discipline—everything I look for in a lead actor. He’s immersing himself in the character and culture with incredible commitment.”
Production is expected to begin in early 2026, with location shoots planned in Iceland and Norway. The cast will also include a mix of European and Scandinavian actors, as well as Hollywood veterans, although the full lineup is yet to be announced.
As Hamilton prepares for the final seasons of his legendary Formula 1 career, his venture into acting with Hammer of the North marks a thrilling new chapter. Fans of both cinema and sport will be watching closely as one of racing’s greatest legends trades the cockpit for the battlefield.
